Changes to products available on prescription in Calderdale

NHS Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has recommended that GPs stop routinely prescribing a number of lower value products and branded medicines.

The NHS in Calderdale could save around £300,000 each year by stopping prescribing these self-care treatments, which are widely available to buy, without a prescription, from pharmacies and supermarkets.

These include:

  • Baby milks
  • Infant colic products
  • Vitamin supplements
  • Emollients (moisturisers) for minor dry skin conditions
  • Cosmetic products, including eflornithine for facial hair
  • Antifungal nail paints
  • Sunscreen products

Repeat prescriptions will be issued at the doctors' discretion and are normally for patients on long-term treatment. Requests for repeat prescriptions can be made in writing by post, by email at wyicb-cal.beechwoodmedicalcentre@nhs.net or online using either the online form or SystmOnline.

Online Repeat Prescription Request Form.

Please allow 48 weekday hours from request to collection. Where possible, use the tear-off slip attached to your prescription to make a request or ensure you use exact drug names.

Please do not telephone to ask if your prescription is ready since this blocks the phone lines for other patients. We do not accept repeat prescription requests on the telephone unless in an emergency.

Visit SystmOnline.

SystmOnline is also available as an app, which can be used on Apple devices (iPhones and iPads) and on Android devices (mobile phones and tablets). The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and from the Google Play Store. Simply use the links below.

Download on the App Store.

Minor Illness Scheme

The surgery is supported by a minor illness scheme whereby patients who qualify for free prescriptions can obtain advice and prescriptions from the chemist regarding many minor illnesses, without the need to see a doctor. This 'passport' scheme is for minor illnesses such as sore throats, earache, colds and flu etc. If you have a minor illness ask the receptionist for details of this scheme.

Practice Pharmacist

Our Practice Pharmacist Support, CPS (Clinical Pharmacist Solutions), are available to discuss medication issues as well as complete annual medication reviews. These are usually booked by the practice nurse team or reception staff but please speak to the reception team if you feel you would like to discuss your medication with them. This can then be arranged. CPS are commissioned by Beechwood Medical Centre and carry out work in agreement with our practice doctors.
